In this article we guide you through the process of automated part marking. These tools are easy to use, and can save a draftsman hours and hours. Next to time savings, the accuracy could be improved, which leads to better building kits.
Disclaimer: Always check the output that the automated marking delivers. We strive for a 100% accuracy score, but cannot guarantee it.
Using automated marking
The video above describes the functionalities in the automated part marking section that are in the latest release of July 2025. A textual description is given below. Try it yourself!
IMPORTANT NOTE:
There are extra layers created after running the automated marking commands. “MarkingOtherSide” and “TextsOtherSide”. These layers are used for storing the marking information that are written at the back side of the plate part. These layers are used in the Nesting Process; therefore, we advise not to change these layers and keep them invisible while working on a drawing file.
The automated part marking consists out of 6 commands. They are briefly described below.
1. SHIPMARKPARTS
Marks parts that are close to each other within a single drawing.
- Run this command in a completed drawing.
- The system will detect adjacent connections and apply the appropriate markings.
2. SHIPMARKSTIFFENERS
Marks selected stiffeners onto selected parts in a single drawing.
3. SHIPMARKADJACENT
Marks adjacent parts & stiffeners from other drawings onto selected part in the current base drawing.
- Run this in a base drawing (e.g., longitudinal or horizontal).
- Use the file explorer to select drawing files you want to mark (e.g., frames).
- The system will mark adjacent parts & stiffeners from the selected files onto the base drawing.
4. SHIPREMOVEALLMARKINGS
Automatically removes all markings from selected parts.
- Run the command.
- Select any parts from which you want to clear all markings.
